Wed 26 March 2025 – Dr Iain Scott FREng: “80 years of Airborne Radar – From the Cavity Magnetron to Multi-Function RF Systems”
Dr Iain Scott FREng, VP Capability & Chief Technology Office at Leonardo Electronics Division.
The talk explored key milestones in the developments of airborne radar, from the development of the Cavity Magnetron at Birmingham University during WW2, through to the advent of Multi-Function RF Systems. It was illustrated with a selection of Edinburgh-developed radars spanning the Ferranti, GEC, Marconi and Leonardo eras in a most interesting talk.
Dr Scott distributed copies of the 1st edition, just published, of the Maxwellian magazine, the Journal of the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation. This edition is devoted to The History of Radar and includes many of the photographs shown in the lecture.
