8 Jan 2025 – LRS Video Night at Edinburgh Cine & Video Society

LRS Video Night at Edinburgh Cine & Video Society, 23A Fettes Row, Edinburgh – Peter Dick GM4DTH.

The first meeting of the year for the Lothians Radio Society was held on a cold and frosty evening. It was at the Edinburgh Cine And Video Society which has facilities for screening material on a large screen with surround sound. The programme followed up on last year’s presentation which was the feature film ‘The Boat that Rocked’ by changing from the fictional world of off-shore pirate radio to the real world. This year it was a documentary ‘A Day in the Life of Radio Caroline’ in the ‘Ross Revenge’ era. It revealed that life in the real world aboard a radio ship was not glamorous and it was actually rather tatty and cramped. However, the enthusiasm of those involved showed true commitment to their cause. Off-shore radio evolved to generate money through advertising to an audience which preferred the programme material and personalities of the disc jockeys to any other station. Ronan O’Rahilly was the entrepreneur behind the station and he featured in several interview clips giving his viewpoint. The evening concluded with an entertaining ‘film noir’ which borrowed a lot from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 ‘The 39 Steps’.
