26 Jan 2024 – Ian W. Sheffield GM3VEI

 

Ian Sheffield GM3VEI was a keen member of the LRS in the 1960s and 70s. After retirement from Edinburgh University, Dept. of Astronomy, Blackford Hill, he moved to Haddington and latterly to Dunbar. He continued to attend LRS Surplus Equipment Sales quite often. He died of cancer on 26th January 2024 aged 77, peacefully in the Western General Hospital.

His funeral on 12th February 2024 at the Houndwood Crematorium, nr. Eyemouth, was attended by Alan GM3PSP on behalf of the LRS.

Ian’s career was in astronomy at Edinburgh University and he made several visits to an observatory in Hawaii. It included his obtaining two (very small) samples of moon dust from the 1969 Apollo-11 lunar mission.

In the garden of Ian’s house near Haddington he had the actual cockpit section of a jet fighter aircraft. In it, he restored the electronic equipment.
