15 Nov 2022 – Peter GM4DTH received his first Amateur Radio MF beacon SA6RR (Sweden) on 478.94kHz. QSL card received already – see below.
The Swedish SA6RR amateur radio beacon (478.9kHz) was received at 03:18 GMT 15th November 2022 during an aeronautical Non Directional Beacon (NDB) receiving session. This was the first amateur signal received in this band. The report was 559 and the message was ‘VVV BEACON DE SA6RR SA6RR SA6RR – PSE RPRT TO WWW.RADIORUD.SE – ‘ . The website in the message has details of the beacon which operated at an estimated power of 3W ERP. The aerial is about 22m high, capacity-loaded with a ground system using 17 100m radials.

Non-directional beacons received in Edinburgh IO85JW during this session were mainly weak with stable background noise with almost no static. This was not one of the better nights for listening. The beacons logged listed below illustrate the propagation conditions.
The receive aerial was a ‘Miniwhip’ at 10m elevation, receiver and recorder was an Icom IC-705 with a MF rx converter. All equipment was battery powered
