The University of Edinburgh has commemorated the 50th anniversary this year of the death of Sir Edward Appleton, discoverer of the ionosphere, by laying a wreath at his gravestone in Morningside cemetery, Edinburgh, just a short walk from the meeting place of the Lothians Radio Society. It is easily found near the west end of the cemetery, facing east. Appleton was Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University during your scribe’s time as a student, who remembers hearing him speak several times.
