9 Jan 2013 – Video Evening – “The Undersea War” – Peter Dick GM4DTH

 U-96 from Das Boot

The first meeting of the Lothians Radio Society in 2013 was the annual Video Evening, presented in Blu-Ray high-definition video by Peter Dick GM4DTH on 9th January in the screening room of the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society in Fettes Row, Edinburgh. The event started with a matinee screening of the German feature film Das Boot (The Boat). The main programme was a compilation of German, American and British films on submarine warfare and radar in WWII. This was followed by two videos shot by Peter of LRS portable contest stations GM3HAM/P in recent years – the RSGB Microwave Contest 2007 and the RSGB 2m Trophy Contest 2012. On display at the ECVS facility was a SONAR hologram of the underwater wreck of the HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, Orkney, brought by Prof. Tom Stevenson from the Museum of Communication in Burntisland.
