John is an occasional SOTA (Summits on the Air) activator; this was taken by a man with a dog on the summit of Tinto. The shack is carried in the rucksack; the antenna is attached to the back (fishing pole etc!).

Here’s a typical setup on the summit of Cairnharrow, a favourite hill in Galloway, near Gatehouse of Fleet. The pole supports 2m and 70cm beams, with the 23cm beam on a tripod.

John has put on a station for JOTA – Jamboree On The Air – from Bonaly Camp near Edinburgh since 2012, giving the Scouts, both boys and girls these days, the chance to speak to other Scouts by Amateur Radio.
